Milton unveils Greetings public art project

12 murals on display in Mill Park
April 19, 2023

A healthy crowd and sunny weather in Mill Park were the perfect backdrop for the unveiling of Milton’s newest public art installation April 16.

The 12-panel work, Greetings, is part of a public art initiative by the town’s economic development committee. Artists were tasked to welcome people to Milton through their own interpretation of the theme, said Chair Annette Babich.

Four of the works were created by teams of students from local schools – H.O. Brittingham Elementary School, Milton Elementary School, Mariner Middle School and Cape Henlopen High School – while the remaining eight pieces were produced by artists selected by an independent panel.

Three columns of four murals were placed in the park ahead of the April 16 unveiling, and the exhibit will be on display through the end of June.

Babich said, “I love it. I think we have good momentum going here. I hope this is something we can be doing two or three times each year, and we’ll constantly have a reason for people to visit Milton to see the art.”

This is the second display of public art in Mill Park. The first exhibit, displayed last fall, was a series of wood sculptures by Lewes-based artist Roy Fitzgerald. For the second project, Babich said, she wanted to do a mural project that would also serve as a community event. The third art installation, planned for July, will feature work by Milton artist Allen Sangree.
