The Milton Little League Pat Knight team took top honors in the major-level tournament June 24, with a 4-1 victory at Milton’s Dr. Tobin Field.
It was a pitchers’ duel for the first three innings, as both team’s pitchers were lights out on the mound. Milton got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the fourth. Lewes followed with a single score in the bottom of the inning. Milton scored two insurance runs in the top of the sixth.
Evan Turner threw 5.2 innings for the Milton squad, striking out 12 Lewes batters while giving up just two hits. Lane Wyatt came in from the bullpen to pick up the last out.
Jude Presler went 1-for-3 with two RBIs for Milton, while teammates Nehemiah Woods and Brody Sellers each slammed a hit.
Noah Hedrick toed the mound for the Lewes team, going five innings, giving up four runs on three hits and striking out nine Milton batters. Reed Knowlton came in from the bullpen in the sixth.
Lucca Tobias, Knowlton, Michael Scesa and Chance Gunter each delivered hits for Lewes.
Milton went undefeated in the tournament, beating Georgetown, Lower Sussex and Lewes twice for its 4-0 record.
“The game was one of those nail-biters that Milton and Lewes always have,” said Milton manager Tony Willey. “Scoreless till the fourth when we finally scored a couple runs to start things off. Overall, a great game from both sides. Not bad for a group of kids being told they wouldn’t win a game. Always root for the underdog. Proud of each and every one of them.”
Lewes wins 8-10 tournament
The Lewes 8-10 team defeated Georgetown Little League 13-6 in their first game before coming away with a hard-fought 11-8 victory against Milton. The Milton team defeated Lower Sussex 14-11 before falling to eventual District 3 champion Lewes. In the 8-10 final game, Lewes defeated Millsboro 11-10 June 24 to claim the title.
