Native azalea collection arrives at Delaware Botanic Gardens

December 21, 2019

The Delaware Botanic Gardens received 65 native azaleas Nov. 25, donated by Ernest Koone of Lazy K Nursery in Pine Mountain, Ga.

Ray Sander, botanic gardens president, said, “We are thankful to receive this azalea collection and proud Mr. Koone chose our garden as a home for these azaleas to be featured. This is the second major collection of plants to be donated, and it will facilitate our gardens’ botanical mission.”

Koone said, “The creation of the Delaware Botanic Gardens is an extraordinary undertaking. I've spent much of my career working with horticultural institutions, and it is the greatest pleasure to give this collection of American azaleas to enhance the garden. Much appreciation is due to Kirk Ryan Brown, who instigated this project by introducing me to the gardens’ leadership.”

Volunteers and staff planted the azaleas Dec. 2. Brian Trader, deputy executive director and director of horticulture, worked with Sam Cashdollar, director of facilities, and Jeremy Cole, gardener, to lay out the design for the azalea collection. Trader said, “It’s been a pleasure collaborating with Ernest to receive these plants. I am continuously humbled by the generosity of our industry. The opportunity to educate our guests about the natural beauty of these native species aligns with our gardens’ mission and vision.”

Sheryl Swed, executive director, said, “We thank Mr. Koone for this azalea collection that will greatly enhance our gardens’ beauty. These azaleas will add dramatic color through spring and enhance our gardens as a place to relax and enjoy nature.”
