New films to open at Cinema Art Theater Dec. 30

December 28, 2022

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater, starting Friday, Dec. 30, will present “The Menu,” “Going All the Way,” “The Inspection” and “Spoiler Alert.”

“The Menu” is an American dark comedy-horror film that focuses on a man and a woman who experience an astonishing event. A young couple (Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult) travels to a coastal island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef (Ralph Fiennes) has prepared a lavish menu with some shocking surprises.

“Going All the Way” is an emotional drama originally released in 1997. This newly re-edited and restored version completely upends the original cut, skews closer to the source novel, and cements the film as one of the most aesthetically fresh and thematically fascinating films of the ‘90s, as well as a testament to the ever-evolving possibilities of cinematic rediscovery.

Mark Pelllngton’s adaptation of Dan Wakefield’s seminal novel about a young man coming of age in the 1950s is a timeless story of freedom and repression, friendship and family, sex and love, and the psychological and spiritual struggle to be true to one’s self even if it means going against society’s expectations. Pellington tells an elegant and morally complex tale about two young high school alumni Sonny (Jeremy Davies) and Gunner (Ben Affleck), who are also Korean War veterans returning to their sheltered Indianapolis community, only to find they no longer fit in. The film also stars among others Jill Clayburgh, Lesley Ann Warren, Rachel Weisz and Rose McGowan, among others.

“The Inspection” is a drama based on a true story about a troubled man who discovers how strong he really is. In Elegance Bratton’s deeply moving film inspired by his own story, a young, gay Black man (Jeremy Pope), rejected by his mother (Gabrielle Union) and with few options for his future, decides to join the Marines, doing whatever it takes to succeed in a system that would cast him aside. But even as he battles deep-seated prejudice and the grueling routines of basic training, he finds unexpected camaraderie, strength and support in this new community, giving him a hard-earned sense of belonging that will shape his identity and forever change his life.

“Spoiler Alert” is a tender, inspiring romantic comedy about a couple’s relationship that is transformed when they receive upsetting news. Michael Showalter’s film captures the way a single event can utterly alter one’s life. When Michael (Jim Parsons) discovers that his lover of 14 years, Kit Cowan (Ben Aldridge), has a terminal illness, everything changes. Based on Michael Ausiello’s acclaimed memoir, the story moves beyond misfortune toward finding a new purpose in life. In the light of such devastating news, Michael, along with Kit’s parents (Sally Field and Bill Irwin), reclaims what really matters in life.

Film admission is $9 for members and $11.50 for general audiences.
