Norman Jay Miller, veteran, active in community
Norman Jay Miller, 89, passed away peacefully Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025, at The Moorings at Lewes. Born Aug. 7, 1935, in New Danville, Pa., Norman was the son of the late Jay and Fannie (Newswanger) Miller. He was raised in a loving Mennonite family, one of 10 siblings, who instilled in him values of integrity, compassion, and hard work—values he carried throughout his life.
Norman was a proud graduate of Penn Manor High School Class of 1953. After high school, he worked as a tool and die maker apprentice, a job secured for him by his uncle, Paul Newswanger, that set the foundation for his future career. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a machinist for two years. He earned medals in sharpshooting during his service, and after an honorable discharge, he continued his service in the Army Reserves until 1962.
Following his military service, Norman worked for JL Clark in Lancaster, Pa., as a toolmaker, before beginning a long and fulfilling career at DuPont with Berg Electronics, where he worked for over 30 years.
A lifelong member of the United Church of Christ, Norman found fulfillment in working with the church’s youth group. In 2000, Norman retired to Delaware with his wife, Eileen, where he became an active member of his community. His generosity and kindness extended to many, including his dedication to volunteering with Meals on Wheels from 2000-19, where he helped deliver meals to those in need.
A natural fixer and loving husband, Norman enjoyed spending his free time working on cars, camping, and playing cards with family and friends. His caring nature, sense of humor, humble spirit, and ability to always lend a helping hand left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Norman was preceded in death by his beloved wife of more than 50 years, Eileen (Brimmer) Miller, in 2009; two children, Sandra Marks and Bob Maloney Jr.; one grandchild, Andrew; and seven siblings. He is survived by his children, James Maloney (Denise), Cindy Maloney (Monique), Ronald Miller (Terri) and Carol Miller (BJ); his grandchildren, Larry, Michelle, Kyle, Brett, Lauren, Nathan, Ryan and David; his siblings, Don Miller (Pat) and Barbara Greenawalt; his son-in-law, Luther Marks; and his daughter-in-law, Lori Maloney. He is also survived by several great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will miss him deeply.
There will be no services at this time.
A Celebration of Life luncheon will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 1, at the Bed & Furniture Warehouse, 101 Zooks Mill Road, Ephrata, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Norm’s memory be made to the Meals on Wheels of Delaware, mealsonwheelsde.org.
Norman’s family wishes to thank all those who have shared in his life and will carry his memory forward. May he rest in peace, surrounded by love and gratitude from all those who knew him.
