Officials celebrate Cape High expansion groundbreaking

Excited Cape district employees, elected officials, architects and construction workers braved chilly weather Nov. 20 to celebrate the Cape High expansion groundbreaking.

Cape Superintendent Bob Fulton said 73 percent of voters approved the expansion as part of a March 2018 referendum that also approved a new middle school on the grounds of Shields Elementary in Lewes.

“We have a very supportive community,” Fulton said. 

Fulton said the new wing will house 400 students. Additions include 20 classrooms, four Consortium areas and more cafeteria space.

The two-story expansion will run parallel to Kings Highway and blend with the mansard roof and stone-and-brick facade of the original building. 

Cape High grad Bryan Williams of ABHA Architects in Wilmington designed the expansion.

“I like designing schools because I feel like I’m contributing to something,” he said. “It’s very rewarding to give students a nice place to learn.”

Richard Y. Johnson & Sons Inc. will oversee construction management. Construction is expected to be complete by fall 2021.
