Months ago, after standing for more than 60 years, the First Church of Christ Scientist in Rehoboth Beach was demolished.
At the time, future plans for the property on the corner of Bayard Avenue and Norfolk Street were unknown. Now, according to a public notice issued July 17 by the city, it appears the lot will be subdivided into three smaller lots.
The church property and an empty lot to the south were purchased by an LLC from Harrisburg, Pa., in February for $5.5 million.
The church lot, which is 15,000 square feet, is zoned R-1 residential and large enough to be subdivided into three 5,000-square-foot lots.
The planning commission has set a preliminary review of a minor subdivision application for 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 9.
One Rehoboth Avenue Hotel also on agenda
The planning commission is also scheduled to continue its preliminary review of the proposed One Rehoboth Avenue Hotel.
As proposed, the building would have six levels – two levels of underground parking, ground-level retail and a 60-room hotel on three floors above the retail. The hotel site stretches along the Boardwalk from Rehoboth Avenue to Baltimore Avenue, and encompasses Grotto Pizza on the Boardwalk, the Sirocco Hotel, the former Dolle’s Candyland property and Kohr Bros. Frozen Custard. Total building square footage, excluding lower parking levels, is proposed at a little more than 58,000 square feet.
