Paul Kares concert rocks for the kids

Cullen fundraiser supports young people in music, culinary arts

The music echoed across the field and the runway at Eagle Crest.

For the first time, Paul Cullen hosted his Paul Kares Concert for the Kids at the Hudson Fields/Eagle Crest venue near Milton. Cullen recently took over the airplane hangar once occupied by the Revelation Beer Garden.

The concert was Cullen’s third fundraiser to support music and culinary arts programs for young people in the area.

“We help them with schooling. We paid for transportation for the Cape High School jazz band to go to a competition in Rochester. We send kids to culinary school. We sent our chef from Del Tech, Mitchell Bunting, with his class to Italy,” Cullen said.

“I think it gives children a direction if they are being financially supported by someone who is in the industry,” said Mary Ann Watkins. Her husband, Steve Watkins, is an advisor to Paul Kares.

About 250 people were expected to take in the sounds of two top-notch bands: Melody Trucks & the Fitzkee Brothers, and Cullen’s Bad River.

The Fitzkees, Alex and Drew, are from Lewes. Trucks is the daughter of Butch Trucks of the Allman Brothers Band. They were joined on stage by 14-year old Isiah Cooney and 19-year old Eden Cooney, who are also local artists.

“I’m so proud and so happy that they’re bringing their friends along and it’s just a big musical family,” said Chana Fitzkee, Alex and Drew’s mom.

Bad River featured Cullen, who was formerly with Bad Company, on bass, Tony Sciuto of the Little River Band, Eliot Lewis of Hall & Oates, Alex Fitzkee on drums and Robbie LaBlanc, an international recording artist, on guitar.

“That’s who I like to play with,” Cullen said. “I called in all my favors.”

Between bands, there was still rock ‘n’ roll in the form of a live auction.

The items sold were a ride with the Freedom Boat Club, a Cape Water Taxi cruise, Phillies tickets, a cruise with Cullen in Italy, a two-night stay at the Coast Hotel in Rehoboth Beach with dinners at Sirocco and Shorebreak Lodge, and an evening with dinner and music for 40 people at Cullen’s The Room at Cedar Grove near Lewes.
