Philly teen charged after leading police on chase in stolen car
A Philadelphia teen faces charges after leading police on a chase March 29 from the Millsboro area to Milton before stopping south of Milford.
Police were notified of a stolen 2018 BMW X5 in the area of Gravel Hill Road and Zoar Road, and they used GPS coordinates from BMW to track the car, said Sr. Cpl. Leonard DeMalto of the Delaware State Police.
A trooper spotted the BMW at 10:50 a.m. headed southbound on Gravel Hill Road and tried to stop it south of Mount Joy Road, but the driver, Tahvon Hughes, 19, sped away, DeMalto said.
Police continued to pursue the car while the Delaware State Police tracked it from the air. Hughes continued speeding through Millsboro and eventually turned toward Milton. With the helicopter still maintaining a visual on the car, DeMalto said, Hughes drove through Milton and headed northbound on Route 1 toward Milford before stopping north of Sharps Road. Hughes was taken into custody without incident. Troopers confirmed that the BMW had been reported stolen by the Philadelphia Police Department earlier that day, DeMalto said.
Hughes was taken to Troop 4 and charged with felony receiving stolen property over $1,500, disregarding a police officer signal, and multiple traffic charges. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $4,150 cash bond.
