Pianist Carl Cranmer to join Lewes Chamber Players Jan. 28

January 25, 2018

Dr. Carl Cranmer, a classical pianist who made his debut at age 9 with the Philadelphia Orchestra and has since performed in solo recitals throughout Europe, Asia and North America, will join the Lewes Chamber Players for a special musical event at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 28, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Second and Market streets, Lewes.

The concert is offered by the St. Cecilia Guild, which was established as an outreach ministry at St. Peter's two years ago to bring high-quality musical events to residents of southern Delaware. All programs are offered free of charge.

It will be the third of five appearances by the Lewes Chamber Players, the guild's resident ensemble, consisting of organist and harpsichordist T.J. Thomas, cellist Ovidiu Marinescu and violinist Sylvia Ahramjian. Titled "Music for a Cold Afternoon," the concert will consist of compositions from the German Romantic period by Wilhelm Popp, George Frideric Handel and Johannes Brahms, juxtaposed with Cesar Frank's passionate violin sonata.

Cranmer, an associate professor of piano at West Chester University of Pennsylvania who maintains an award-winning piano studio in the Philadelphia area, is a pianist noted for his eclectic solo repertoire and performances of a wide variety of chamber music. He has performed extensively in recital with German violinist Axel Strauss and has collaborated with the Grammy-winning Takacs Quartet, baritone Randall Scarlata, tenor Robert White and violinist Akiko Suwanai. He has performed at the Olympic Music Festival in Washington state, Tanglewood in Massachusetts, Pianofest in the Hamptons, the Bowdoin Summer Music Festival in Maine, and the Summerakademie at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria.

A graduate of the Juilliard School with both a master's and a doctorate degree, Cranmer has performed in Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie’s Weill Hall, Alice Tully Hall and Merkin Hall, all in New York City; at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.; and in the Academy of Music, Verizon Hall and the Perelman Theater in Philadelphia. In addition to performances in Austria, France, England and Japan, he has toured Spain twice and performed at the inaugural recital of a concert series in Panama City, sponsored by the American and Spanish Embassies in Panama.
