This photograph from Oct. 20, 1923, shows pumpkins piled on the grounds of the H.P. Cannon cannery near Bridgeville. Pumpkins have long been an important food crop in Sussex County and continue as such into the 21st century. According to the 2017 federal Agricultural Census, Delaware farmers produced $36,000,000 worth of vegetables, melons, and sweet potatoes that year - a category which includes pumpkins.
