Police arrest 14-year-old for five-car crash

April 17, 2023

Delaware State Police have arrested a 14-year-old Newark boy for his role in a five-car pileup that slowed traffic on Route 1 near Lincoln April 16.

The boy was charged with one count of felony first-degree vehicular assault, five counts of second-degree vehicular assault and various traffic violations.

In the afternoon of April 16, several vehicles at the intersection of Route 1 and Slaughter Beach Road were stopped in the northbound lane for an approaching emergency vehicle. At that time, a black 2023 Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by the boy, failed to stop and crashed into a 2017 Honda CR-V. The CR-V was propelled into a 2021 BMW X3, which then collided with a 2014 Toyota Prius. The Prius then hit a 2018 Ford F-150.

A section of Route 1 northbound was closed off, with traffic diverted to Argos Corner Road to get around the accident scene.

The driver of the CR-V, a 58-year-old man, and a 23-year-old female passenger were taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver and a passenger of the BMW, both 60-year-old men from Baltimore, were also treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Prius, a 65-year-old woman from Phoenixville, Pa., refused medical treatment at the scene. The driver and a passenger of the F-150 were uninjured.

Police said during the investigation, beer bottles were recovered from the area outside the Chevy pickup driven by the 14-year-old boy, who was accompanied by another 14-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy. All the boys were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The 14-year-old driver was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 3 in Georgetown and was released to a guardian after posting a $3,800 secured bond.
