Presidential history made in Rehoboth Beach

United States history was made over the weekend when President Joe Biden announced he would not seek re-election. Isolating and recovering from COVID since July 17, the announcement was made from his local beach house near Rehoboth Beach.

Biden purchased a home in North Shores, a private community between Rehoboth Beach and Gordons Pond, during the summer of 2017. He’s the first sitting president to announce he’s not seeking re-election since President Lyndon Johnson did so in 1968.

In addition to making history, Biden has apparently decided to stay in town a little longer. He was originally scheduled to leave late July 21; however, he remained in town July 22 and it’s unclear how long he will stay. The White House Week Ahead Guidance and Press Schedule issued a brief update a little before 8 p.m., July 21, that said Biden had no public events scheduled for July 22. Additional details to his schedule for the rest of the week would be forthcoming, said the guidance.

As of press deadline July 22, the future schedule had not been published, but the Federal Aviation Administration updated its restricted flight notice to say restrictions would remain in place until 4:15 p.m., Wednesday, July 24.
