Proposed Lewes history art mural on council agenda March 10

March 5, 2025

Members of the Lewes Public Arts Committee unanimously approved a mural proposal to present to mayor and council during their regular meeting at 5:30 p.m., Monday, March 10, at Lewes City Hall, 114 E. Third St., Lewes.

Renowned artist Michael Rosato designed the mural to be painted on the side of the Lewes History Museum on Kings Highway. It will depict the variety of labor and industry that has taken place along the water, from creek to canal, throughout Lewes' storied history. The collaborative effort is a partnership among Art in Bloom, Historic Lewes (formerly known as Lewes Historical Society) and the public arts committee.

If approved, Rosato aims to complete and install the mural between July and September.

"This mural is more than just art; it is a celebration of our heritage," said Heidi Lowe, Lewes Public Arts Committee chair. "It has brought together historians, archaeologists, heritage committees, citizens and city officials to ensure this piece represents Lewes from many angles. We are thrilled to see this project come to fruition."

Lowe said the mural not only promises to add beauty to the community but also serves as a reminder of the hard work, dedication and resilience of those who contributed to the development of the First Town in the First State.

Residents are encouraged to attend the March 10 meeting to show support for the project.
