Purnell Todd Messick, 92, of Bedford, Va., passed away Saturday, Aug. 20, 2022, at his residence. He was born Saturday, Feb. 1, 1930, in Cambridge, Md., to the late Raymond Lee Messick and Elsie Todd Messick.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Johnson Messick; son, Darrell Messick; brother, Eldon Messick; and his sister, Sandra Harper.
He is survived by his son, Dr. Mark McDonough and wife Judy; stepdaughter, Pat (Willey) Moore and husband Bob; his grandchildren, Christian and Joseph McDonough, Clair Monaghan and husband Sean Murphy, and Kim Alderman and husband Scott; his great-grandchildren, Fiona and Owen Murphy, and Brett and Taylor Alderman; his sisters, Donna Lane and husband Milton, and Gene Mackert and husband Bob.
He owned Sussex Custom Cabinet Shop in Stockley, where he was a master cabinet maker and furniture builder. He also proudly served and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was known for his exceptional sense of humor and vivid storytelling.
Funeral services will be held at noon, Tuesday, Aug. 30, at Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown. A time of visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Union Cemetery.
