Race for the Paws 5K brings out 449 participants

August 9, 2024

The 16th annual Race for the Paws 5K, one of the summer's most popular events, took to the streets in Dewey Beach Aug. 4, attracting 449 runners and walkers.

The race was hosted by the Dewey Beach Lions Club, and made its way from the clubhouse on McKinley Avenue though the Dewey area just south of Anne Acres.

Dylan Smiley of Rehoboth Beach, the most talented runner in the Seashore Striders Championship Series, continued his winning streak by capturing the overall title in 15:44.8. Daniel Squicciarini of Flemington, N.J., was second in 17:58.1, while Roman Steis of Arlington, Va., was third in 18:22.4. Joey Andrisani of Wilmington won the masters title in 18:32.4.

On the female side of the action, it was 18-year-old Alexa Avila of Olney, Md., capturing the overall title in 20:02.1, followed by 16-year-old Graycie Lucas of Oklahoma in 20:53.6. Kristin Schaen of Milton grabbed the third position in 21:16.3. Karen Cathell of Berlin, Md., finished 33rd to grab the female masters title in 22:51.8.

Rick Day of Milton walked 36:46 to win the 5K male walk title, while the dancing girl, Laura St. Martin, won the 5K female walk title in 37:49.

"We were just under 500 participants, and I want to thank all the participants, sponsors and volunteers for their dedication to the event and for helping raise funds for such a great and worthy organization in the Humane Animal Partners," said organizer Joey Castillo. "Next year, we are already anticipating going more than 500 participants.”

The Maggie’s Mile

The fourth annual Maggie’s Mile revives the popular ’90s mile-length for the Seashore Striders Friday, Aug. 9, as we remember the late Maggie Browne with multiple heats of the mile. The mile – or the 1,600-meter metric conversion – has always been one of track and field’s most popular events.

Just recently, one of the most exciting races in Olympic history took place as the USA’s Cole Hocker raced off the final turn in third place, found an opening on the inside and sprinted his way to the gold medal for the United States.

The Maggie’s Mile raises money for the annual Maggie Browne Scholarship, which is presented each year during senior awards to a Cape Henlopen track and field graduating female.

Weather note - It is possible the Maggie’s Mile will be pushed back to Saturday, Aug. 10, due to Debby and what this storm is bringing to the Mid-Atlantic states. Please check seashorestriders.com and the Striders Facebook page for updates.
