The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice recently honored Cape High students Sierra Horsey and Davien Weathersby for their demonstration of leadership, improvement, effort and excellence.
Cape High math specialist Janeen McGinley nominated Sierra for the award, stating she is a wonderful young lady who is self-motivated to do well.
“She is always pleasant, willing to learn and discuss, and eager to do well,” McGinley said. “I have no doubt that with this motivation, Sierra will go on to be successful in whatever she chooses to do in her future. I am so glad I get the opportunity to work with her this year.”
Cape High literacy enrichment specialist Karen Maull nominated Davien for the award because of the progress has has made in his reading.
“Not only did Davien increase his score on one of the tools used for progress monitoring, but he has been diligent in practicing weekly to improve his skills,” Maull said. “On several occasions, Davien has initiated the conferences around his progress. When I first met Davien in September, he shared how remote learning did not work for him and that he struggled with his reading. I’m extremely grateful for this opportunity to help Davien strengthen his skills and confidence in reading.”
Each student received a $20 gift card to Browseabout Books in Rehoboth and the youth version of the book “Just Mercy,” by Cape High grad Bryan Stevenson, a civil rights attorney and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative organization.
