February 15, 2022

The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice recently honored Rehoboth Elementary students A’hmaj Thompson and Allen Brown for their demonstration of leadership, improvement, effort and excellence.

A’hmaj, a fifth-grader, said she likes her teachers because they are good listeners and are kind in helping with schoolwork. Teachers say A’hmaj is a very dedicated student who shows great perseverance in her work. She collaborates very well with her peers, and her positivity influences any group with which she works. A’hmaj’s growth mindset makes everyone around her a better learner.

A’hmaj is interested in a military career training dogs for CSI searches. After attending the Apple Scrapple Festival, where she met people who worked in this career path, she did her own research and decided she wanted to pursue it. She loves to read, and language arts is her favorite subject. When not in school, she likes to play softball, do math problems or have dance-offs with her friends.

Allen, a fourth-grader, enjoys math, especially division. Allen said he loves coming to school to see all his past and present teachers and friends. Teachers say Allen comes to school each day with a smile on his face and has made great gains in both reading and math. Allen actively participates in whole-group and small-group instruction. Teachers say Allen obviously enjoys school and learning, and doesn’t back down from challenges.

Allen likes football and computers. He said he might like to design computers for teachers in the future. When not in school, he likes to play video games with his two special friends. Allen said he admires his parents because they help him when he gets frustrated, and his teachers help him understand his work. Allen said he likes learning in person much better than using his iPad at home.

Each student received a $20 gift card to Browseabout Books in Rehoboth and a book about Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, the first Black person to serve in that capacity.

SDARJ’s education committee initiated the award to recognize students in the Cape district who represent ideals of leadership, effort and excellence in their schools.
