Ravens soccer flies over Cape 6-1

April 22, 2019

After Cape’s strong comeback to defeat Indian River 4-3 in overtime April 16, the Lady Vikings may have still felt the exhausting emotional and physical effects two days later, as they had no answer for Sussex Tech, losing 6-1 at Legends Stadium.

Cape moves to 8-2, while the Ravens are now 7-2.

“We didn’t have an answer for Lilly [Short],” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “She proved to be the deciding factor. She’s such a fantastic player. I take full responsibility for not having an answer for her.”

The freshman scored two goals, but her footwork, ball control and field sense stifled the Vikings.

Hannah Murphy, Emily McDonald, Angela Miltenberger and Kayla Brady each had one score for Tech. Brady helped on three Ravens scores. Brooke Hollingsworth had the lone goal for the Vikings off an assist from Lindsey Swontek.

“This blowout may be beneficial in the long run,” said Kilby. “In order to improve, we have to face diversity so we can find our areas of weakness. The comeback over Indian River was a true indicator of our level of grit and fight. We have proven that we need to improve on restarts such as corners and free kicks.”

The Ravens outshot the Vikings 13-7 and held a 7-3 edge on corners. Tech senior goalkeeper Valencia Whealton made six saves, while Cape’s Lucy Siranides made five stops.

“Our mental approach and preparation for this match was key,” said Tech coach Carlos Villa. “We were able to counter Cape’s initial energy with early goals, enabling us to maintain momentum throughout the match.”

The Vikings JV fell to Tech 4-1. They move to 4-2-1, while Tech is now 3-2-1.

Cape will return to action Tuesday, April 30, when the Vikings will honor their seven seniors. Tech will play Caravel Monday, April 29, at home.
