Read and watch 'Guys and Dolls' March 11 at Rehoboth library
The Rehoboth Beach Film Society and Rehoboth Beach Public Library invite film and literary enthusiasts to a screening of "Guys and Dolls” at 4 p.m., Wednesday, March 11, in the upstairs community room at the library.
Adapted from two short stories, “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown” and “Blood Pressure,” by American writer Damon Runyon, this blockbuster film stars Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine.
This screening is part of the monthly Read a Movie series in which members read a little-known short story in advance of the screening, then gather to watch the film and share their thoughts about how well, or not so well, the story was expanded to the big screen.
Great songs, stellar performances and a star-studded cast make this 1955 musical a time-honored classic. With indestructible numbers like, “If I Were a Bell,” “A Bushel and a Peck,” and “Luck be a Lady,” it’s just as vibrant today as it was then. “Guys and Dolls” is the saga of two incurable gamblers, Sky Masterson and Nathan Detroit, who involve each other in a plot to maintain "The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York." Nominated for countless film awards, it won Jean Simmons a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Actress in a Musical Comedy and is considered, by many, to be the best musical ever performed.
The Read a Movie series takes place on the second Wednesday of each month from September through May. Read a Movie is free and open to the public. To sign up, and receive the stories in advance, email Denise Hoban at outreach@rehobothfilm.com. On the evening of the screening, attendees can receive 15 percent off Dos Locos’ regular-priced dinner entrees. For more information go to www.rehobothfilm.com or call 302-645-9095.
