The Rehoboth Beach Film Society and the Rehoboth Beach Public Library invite film and/or literary enthusiasts to a screening of “The Woman in Green” starting at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 10, in the upstairs community room at the Rehoboth Beach Public Library. This film is an adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Adventure of the Empty House.”
The screening is part of the monthly Read a Movie series in which members read a little-known short story in advance of the screening, then gather to share their thoughts about how well - or not so well - the story was expanded to the big screen.
“The Woman in Green” is the 11th Sherlock Holmes film that Basil Rathbone (Holmes) and Nigel Bruce (Dr. Watson) made together. In this film, Holmes and Watson are trying to solve the case of the Finger Murders. When four women are found slain with their forefingers severed, Scotland Yard calls on the always-clever Holmes for help. The police are prepared to write off the killings as the work of a madman, but Holmes believes the killings to be part of a very sane, yet twisted plot. The trail leads the detective to a beautiful hypnotist in league with an old nemesis. The movie comes to a nerve-racking conclusion as a hypnotized Holmes roams along the edge of a penthouse!
The popular Read a Movie series takes place on the second Wednesday of each month September to May. Read a Movie is free and open to the public. To sign up and receive the stories in advance, email Denise Hoban at outreach@rehobothfilm.com.
