Rehoboth Beach officially kicked off its summer season with the beach patrol’s second annual bell-ringing ceremony May 28.
Capt. Jeff Giles started the new tradition last year, when Mayor Stan Mills rang the bell at the inaugural ceremony. Mills was given the honor again this year.
Last year, everyone was in hoodies and sweatshirts, said Mills, addressing the lifeguards and the small crowd gathered on the Boardwalk. The weather this year was much better, which is a signal it’s going to be a great year, he said.
Police Chief Keith Banks is entering his second year in charge of the beach patrol. There’s a full complement of guards, he said.
“They’re ready to go,” said Banks.
The Rehoboth Beach Patrol headquarters, 1 Baltimore Ave., is located on the Boardwalk at the end of Baltimore Avenue. Guards are on duty the Saturday before Memorial Day through three weeks following Labor Day. Weekdays hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Weekend and holiday hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
