Rehoboth Beach celebrated the completion of the ocean outfall project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony June 15, in the Deauville Beach parking lot.

Representatives from all levels of government were on hand to help dedicate the $52 million project.

Mayor Paul Kuhns called the event a milestone for the city and thanked the community for its support, patience, and understanding during the construction project.

“The project celebrated today is more than a series of pipelines and pump stations; we see it in a broader context, as an essential part of the vital effort to improve the water quality of the Inland Bays and to connect our community through strategic infrastructure investment,” said Kuhns.

U.S. Sen. Tom Carper said the outfall was the best solution for stopping this point of pollution.

“We have been working to take all-point source discharge from the Inland Bays for a long time. With the completion of this outfall, this has stopped,” said Carper.

Center for the Inland Bays Executive Director Chris Bason said it will take years for the bays to heal from all the pollution that’s been pumped, but he said this change is exciting, and it will be interesting to see how that healing happens.
