An interesting front-page story in the Jan. 24 edition of the Cape Gazette described the difficulties faced by Milton residents because of speeding. Drivers ignore the 25 mph speed limit, potentially endangering pedestrians, especially neighborhood children.
It’s interesting to me because for years I have raised similar concerns about vehicles speeding on neighborhood streets in Rehoboth Beach.
The article notes that the Milton street is a state road and, as such, subject to a 25 mph minimum speed limit. However, the neighborhood streets in Rehoboth, where I have advocated for reducing the speed limits, are all city streets, subject to local laws.
My suggestion is straightforward: reduce the current 25 mph to 15 mph. Other beach communities – Bethany, Dewey, Fenwick Island – have implemented 15 mph speed limits on many neighborhood streets. I have campaigned for this change since an accident on my street in 2022. I raised the matter during a traffic study conducted for the city in 2023. More recently, in November 2024, I addressed the subject in a listening session as part of a study of issues to be considered for a proposed city strategic plan.
I sympathize with the citizens of Milton; your situation is a difficult problem with few options for a solution. On the other hand, in Rehoboth Beach, the resolution is simple – do it!
