Rendon shares why he’s running

September 3, 2024

I am running to be the Democratic Party's nominee to represent the 14th District in the General Assembly, and I am writing to respectfully request that voters vote for me in the Sept. 10 primary.

As I began exploring a run for this seat over a year ago, it became clear to me that voters in the 14th District want a candidate who will listen to their concerns and who will ensure those concerns are addressed in Dover with professionalism and competence.

Since officially throwing my hat in the ring, my team and I have knocked on over 5,000 doors. We’re hearing that voters are overwhelmingly concerned with: overdevelopment and traffic, environmental preservation, increased access to healthcare, affordable workforce housing, education, quality of life for senior citizens, enhanced opportunities for small businesses, and protection for all our civil rights.

I believe my decades of experience on Capitol Hill as a legislative aide, as director of congressional relations for UNICEF, and as chair of the legislative committee of the Delaware Human and Civil Rights Commission set me apart from my opponents. I want to bring that experience to work for you, the residents of the 14th District. It pays to have somebody who actually knows the ropes, knows how to pass a bill, knows how to work with legislators, knows how to work with advocacy groups, knows how to build momentum for a cause and knows how to go to the halls of the Legislature to advocate for something that's right. In fact, that’s my specialty.

My approach to legislating also sets me apart. I will not let the messenger (me) get in the way of delivering the message (your concerns). That's because I firmly believe it’s about you, the voters in the 14th District, not me. You are hiring me to do the job, and I have the background of years of public service to do that job well. In fact, you need look no further than my current record as chair of the legislative committee of the Delaware Human and Civil Rights Commission to see that I am already a proven advocate for the issues of concern to voters. I know how the legislative process works and I already have been applying that experience to my work for the commission with the General Assembly.

We kicked off this campaign at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand because, to me, the Bandstand is where we as neighbors gather to celebrate being neighbors. Whether listening to one of our great local bands or watching fireworks together, the Bandstand is an icon of our community. If you elect me, I promise I will bring the spirit of the Bandstand to Dover because I believe when we gather as a diverse community, set aside our differences, and celebrate what unites us, we all win. It’s time for getting results, not more politics as usual. I offer you fresh, energetic, constituent-focused, full-time representation. The only baggage I carry is yours.

I respectfully ask for your vote in the primary. I am ready to work for you, and it would be an absolute honor to serve you.

Marty Rendon
Candidate
14th District
