Replica railroad station construction underway
After more than four years of planning, a collaborative effort to build a replica train station at the Lewes Public Library is underway.
The project is a collaboration among the Lewes library, Lewes in Bloom’s Art in Bloom committee, Lewes Parks & Recreation Commission and Schell Brothers.
The Lewes Junction Library-Arts Project will mimic the original Lewes Railroad Station of the early 1900s, which was once located at this site. It will be decorated with a variety of art projects. The station is located adjacent to the restored Lewes Junction Railroad and Bridge Association’s 1917 Pennsylvania Railroad caboose.
The replica station, surrounding the library’s emergency power generator equipment, will be constructed on the library’s northwest side, adjacent to the Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail. A children’s reading wall adorned with book-inspired artwork will enclose the solar inverters, and fencing will surround the Lewes Board of Public Works transformer. The enclosures will help make the outdoor area near the library’s utility equipment safer. Schell Brothers is donating the construction of these enclosures.
After completion of enclosure construction, Art in Bloom and the library will begin efforts to add artwork on the rear of the station enclosure and windows, and the children’s reading wall.
