Rings around the rotunda a celebration of 2023 field hockey state championship

March 20, 2024

It was rings around the Cape rotunda March 19 on the spring equinox as the sun sank below the western horizon.

The 2023 state champion field hockey team members were presented with rings by Jostens from Swarthmore Sweethearts. Jostens sales reps Chuck and Amy Hudson, whose daughter Grace won a ring as a Cape player two seasons earlier, presented the rings.

Players were introduced by ascending numbers, with No. 1 Claire Lopez the first to receive a ring and sister Anna, No. 99, getting the last ring awarded.

Each player received a scrapbook of the season. There were also a sheet cake, cupcakes and flower arrangements. Cape hockey also has its own portable backdrop used for signings and state championship photos.

The girls were told not to open the ring box until all had a ring in hand, setting up the one dramatic gasping moment.

Coaches Kate Austin and Tracy Greisbaum were there to congratulate each player.
