Ruth Reed Marvel, retired librarian
Ruth Reed Marvel, 90, of Milton went to be with her Lord and Savior Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Lewes. Ruth was born March 4, 1928, on the Island Farm in Broadkill. She was the second child of the late James and Virgie Dickerson Reed.
Ruth attended the one-room Broadkiln School as a child, and graduated from Milton Consolidated School, where she met her husband, Harry W. Marvel.
Ruth worked as a library aide at Milton Junior High for many years. She then became library director at the County Library in Milton, where she retired in 1985. Ruth attended Milton Wesleyan Church and the Grace Church of Milton. Ruth was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing many dinners. It was said she cooked enough food to feed several armies. If you left her table hungry, it was your own fault. Ruth also enjoyed playing cards, dominoes, and watching the Phillies. More than anything, Ruth was devoted to her family.
Besides her parents, Ruth was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Harry W. Marvel; her son, Willard M. Marvel; sister, Mary Hughes; brother, Charles Reed; and granddaughter, Sharon Johnston.
She is survived by her children, James C. Marvel and his wife Marion of Milford, Phillip R. Marvel and his wife Bev of Milton, and Amy M. Smith and her husband C.R., also of Milton; seven grandchildren, Jeffery Marvel, Bethany Roth (Nick), Courtney Evans (Jason), Natalie Marvel, Katie Chappell (David), Kelly Moyer (Mason) and Jake Smith; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Carol Adams; sister-in-law Carolyn Reed and brother-in-law James W. Marvel.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the nurses and staff at Harbor Healthcare for the care, love, kindness that was shown to "Ruthie" during her residency at the nursing home.
