Seahawks soccer soars past Delmar 4-0

Rainy conditions favor the Seahawks
October 6, 2022

Since opening the season with a loss to Cape, the Sussex Academy soccer squad has put together an undefeated streak of four wins and a tie, including a 4-0 victory over Delmar Oct. 4 at home.

In weather suited more for Seahawks than Wildcats, Sussex Academy flew through the heavy rain and scored two goals in each half to garner the shutout victory.

McKenna Danahy started off the scoring from Logan Serpico at the three-minute mark. Liam Stegall added an unassisted goal at 30 minutes to take the Seahawks into the locker room up two goals. Esteban Lara hit the twine at the 65-minute mark off a helper from Justin Mendoza. Alex Jaimes finished the scoring at the 70-minute mark off a pass from Stegall.

“I think for us, playing in these conditions, it was all about our mindset going into it,” said Sussex Academy head coach RJ Dina. “We told the boys no matter what, be prepared to play in horrible conditions. Our boys were ready for that and prepared. It’s easier to be at home in these situations as well; it builds confidence going into the match that often makes the difference. We jumped out in front early on a set piece, and that set the tone. We play a very particular style that makes it difficult for teams to break down. This group is resilient, young and hungry. Something to watch out for down the stretch.”

The Seahawks had an 11-6 advantage in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corners.

Sussex Academy goalkeeper Carter Norton made five saves, while Wildcats goalie Caleb Ritchey stopped seven Seahawks scoring attempts.

The Seahawks host Caravel Friday, Oct. 7.
