Seashore Striders 5-Miler attracts 150 runners

Watch out for biting horseflies

Hairy horseflies that bore into human muscles for brunch were a nuisance along the Gordons Pond Trail for the 150 runners participating in the 42nd running of the Seashore 5-Miler July 14.

Ryan Anderson, 26, of Burtonsville, Md., ran stride for stride with Brian Burke, 44, of Rehoboth Beach, winning by one second, 29:10 to 29:11.

“He pulled me along and let me stay with him,” Burke said. “I could sense he was a lot faster than me.” 

Emily Young, 24, of Camillus, N.Y., was first woman and fourth overall in 32:28. Thomas Metkus, 43, of Lutherville-Timonium, Md., won the male masters in 30:24. Mairin Smith, 43, of Charlottesville, Va., won the female masters in 38:34.

John Costello, 63, bravely ran shirtless along the steamy trails and won his age group in 35:59. “I’m soaked with sweat, and it may sound weird, but I love this feeling, " Costello said. “Now I’m going to go jump in the ocean. I love that feeling, too.”

Highlights - Paul “Crusader Rabbit” Montini, 56, won the 55-59 age group in 32:49. Elise Thayer, 36, of Great Britain ran 36:58 to capture the 35-39 women's age group. Zoe Burke, 20, of Great Falls, Va., captured the 20-24 age group in 37:00. Nate Parsley, 34, the head swim team coach at Salisbury University and brother of Nikki Parsley, the head field hockey coach at Liberty University, won the 30-34 age group in 38:22. Brittany Croll, 40, won the 40-44 age group in 38:46. Debra Issler, 69, won the 65-69 age group in 41:18. Mary Kessler, 75, won the 75-79 age group in 44:28. Kim Geyer, 56, the retired cop with hops, won the 55-59 age group in 45:55. Sean Serfass, 66, won the 65-69 age group in  45:35. Bernie Gallagher, 83, owned his age group by placing first in 1:36:48.
