The Seashore Striders have organized a virtual racing series during the month of April for not only Delmarva, but also runners and walkers throughout the country. The series opened at midnight, April 1, and in just 20 hours, it had 61 participants and $2,280 in donations. Seven states were represented.
The series will run through Thursday, April 30, and will consist of completing six different distances – 1 mile, 3.1 miles (5K), 5 miles, 6.2 miles (10K), 10 miles and 13.1 miles (half marathon). Runners may complete the distance as many times as they wish to lower their overall time.
Custom State of Delaware awards made of wood will be presented to the overall male and female, masters male and female, and top three finishers the following age groups: 9 and under, 10-13, 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, and 80 and over.
Runners should send their results to tim@seashorestrider.com with a photo of themselves plus their time and distance. Results will then be put into a scoring program, compiling each runner’s best performance for each of the six distances they complete.
Participants are reminded not to run or walk in groups and to obey social distancing with other runners.
The most important part of the project is the donation piece. One of the requirements is that each participant must make a donation to one of the following nonprofits: American Red Cross, Delaware Humane Association, Meals On Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth, Blood Bank Of Delmarva Coronavirus Response Fund, Milton Community Food Pantry, Beebe Healthcare COVID-19 Relief Fund, Code Purple Sussex County, Seashore Striders Delaware or Food Bank of Delaware.
There is no limit on the amount you can donate or the number of donations you can make. The Striders have set a goal of raising $10,000.
