Sheila Cousins, loved cooking, knitting

September 26, 2022

Sheila Cousins, 92, passed away Thursday, Sept. 22, 2022. Sheila was born Nov. 23, 1929, in Cambridgeshire, England. She was the second of four children to George and Ethel Goodge. At the time of her passing Sheila resided in Lewes.

Sheila was predeceased by the love of her life, Denis Cousins, whom she met at 20 years of age. Their first date was in April 1949 and was shortly followed by engagement in May.  They were married Dec. 31, 1949.  Sheila and Denis began their family in High Wycombe, England before emigrating with their two young children to the United States in 1957. They went on to have two more children while living in Rehoboth Beach. Sheila and Denis became proud U.S. citizens in 1985.

Sheila worked as a bookkeeper for many years. She was a longtime member of Daughters of the British Empire. Her ease in conversation and her quick wit made Sheila a pleasure to be around. Sheila loved to knit and made many beautiful items, including baby blankets for each of her grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking meals and making desserts each night for her family. Her Sunday dinners of roast beef and Yorkshire pudding were always enjoyed by all. Her tradition of making sausage rolls each Christmas is carried on to this day by her children and grandchildren. In her retirement, Sheila enjoyed traveling the world. She visited her home country of England, several other European countries and saw many sights in the United States.

Sheila is survived by her four children: Fay Best and her husband Alfred of Lewes, Andrew Cousins and his wife Amy of Millsboro, Dean Cousins and his wife Maria of Stratham, N.H., and Karen Reed and her husband Richard of Milton. She adored her eight grandchildren, who call her Grandma, Fred and his wife Nicole, Kristy and her husband Jerry, Jarrod, Cameron, Brandi and her husband Pat, Ryan and his wife Megan, Alex and her husband Ross, and Samantha. She was extremely proud to be a great-grandma of 19 great-grandchildren. Sheila will be greatly missed by many nieces and nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her siblings June Drzymalski, Ivor Goodge, Glynn Goodge; and her sister-in-law Marion Burton-Stanley.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 30, at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Pilottown Rd., Lewes.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.
