Sheila G. Meneely Hilbeck, avid tennis player, golfer

Sheila G. Meneely Hilbeck, 88, passed away peacefully in her home in Lewes Sunday, Jan. 28, 2024, surrounded by her family. Sheila was born Aug. 2, 1935, to Ernest Meneely and Mabel Quick Meneely in Philadelphia, Pa. While attending high school in Springfield, Pa., Sheila met her loving husband of 70 years, John (Jack) Edward Hilbeck.

In addition to her parents, Shelia is predeceased by her brother, Ernest Meneely; and her sister, Patricia (Meneely) Gildner.  Left to cherish Sheila’s memory are her husband, Jack; son, Kenneth (Mary Anne); daughter, Melanie Redmond (Dennis); daughter, Patricia (William) Thatcher; and son, David Hilbeck (Denise); along with eight grandchildren, Jason (Holly), Katie (David), Michelle (Breck), Melissa (Kal), Jennifer (Matthew), Adam (Jessica), Alex and Jonathan; and eight great-grandchildren.

Over the years, Sheila became an avid tennis player and golfer, playing both sports well into her 70s. Socially, Sheila enjoyed playing bridge and pinochle with friends, as well as traveling with her husband and many friends to various golf destinations around the country. In the last years of her life, Sheila enjoyed the company of her great-grandchildren and watching their many antics.

The family would like to thank the hospice personnel provided by AccentCare for the excellent services they provided to make Sheila’s last days at home comfortable for her and her family.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 9, at Conley’s United Methodist Church, 33106 Jolyns Way, Lewes.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sheila’s name to Beebe Healthcare, 424 Savannah Road, Lewes, DE 19958 for the compassionate care they provided for her in the latter stages of her life.
