Smyrna wins Henlopen track championships

Cape’s Ryan Baker sets school record in 3,200 meters

Polytech had triple winners in Matt Gatune and Casey Talamini-Keleman as Smyrna won both the boys’ and girls’ teams competitions at the Henlopen Conference track championships May 13-14 at Lake Forest High School. 

The Smyrna boys were champions with 147 points followed by Sussex Central with 95.5 and Polytech with 83.

The Smyrna girls finished with 165.5 points to out-distance runner-up Cape Henlopen with 120.83 and Polytech with 79.5. 

Gatune won the 3,200 meters (9:29.4), 1,600 meters (4:23.49) and 800 meters (1:59.1). Talamini-Keleman won the long jump (18-feet-4-inches), triple jump (38-7) and pole vault (11-3). 

The race everyone was talking about was the boys’ 3,200 final. Following Gatune were Ryan Baker in 9:35 and Kenny Guy in 9:36. Baker, a Cape sophomore, is the new school record holder for the outdoors 3,200 meters. 

The Cape girls established season-best times while winning the 4-by-800 relay in 10:05.90 with a team of Hannah Maney, Tia Jarvis, Lexi Dougherty and Emma Duffield, and in the 4-by-400 relay with a team of Maney, Taylor Johnson, Jarvis and Reagan Ciabattoni in 4:12.50.

The DIAA State Championship are set for Friday and Saturday, May 21-22, at Dover High School
