Merchants and restaurant owners are happy. Patrons wish for more parking and want to be able to make reservations.
Lewes residents get up early to beat the traffic and hit the supermarkets and our famous farmers markets.
Some suggestions to make your stay better and feel like a local:
1. Smile when you walk down the street and say hello to most of the people you see
2. Start a conversation when you are in a queue so the time passes faster, and you might be in for a surprise
3. Lewes has become a more diverse community, so unless you need directions, don’t ask people if they live here
4. Cross at the crosswalks; most local cars will stop for you, especially if you are jogging, bicycling or with children. Just remember to share the roads and don’t jaywalk
5. Some merchants put out water for dogs, but it doesn’t hurt to carry some, and remember sand can be very hot if you have paws, not sandals
6. Bicyclists, hug the curb, especially when there are no bike paths. I have had to bandage a few people on Pilottown Road. Most cars will give you a wide berth
7. Make sure you visit the historical society and the chamber of commerce to get a birds-eye view of the happenings. We are lucky to have a local paper where you will find many activities on the weekends
8. Try to park with the front of the car parking outward to protect yourself from accidents and the wayward paths of shoppers
9. Don’t honk! This is a telltale sign that you are from New York or New Jersey. We already know there are too few roads so don’t remind us. Occasionally, let cars in from the side roads and shopping centers. It is a nice thing to do and the other driver tends to pass it along
10. Finally, remember what the letters LSD stand for, not the drug, but Lower, Slower Delaware. Isn’t that why you came?
Some locals believe you have to be born here to consider yourself a local. So let us be tolerant of each other.
