Speaker announced for May 15 Delaware Tech commencement
Delaware Technical Community College announced that Nicole Sherry, head groundskeeper at Camden Yards, will be the commencement speaker at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 15, at the Owens Campus in Georgetown.
Sherry’s fascination with plants and her concern for the environment led her to Delaware Tech, where she enrolled in the college’s Turf Management program. Then one day her irrigation class took a field trip to Camden Yards to see its state-of-the-art water system.
After graduation, she pursued and was awarded an internship at Camden Yards, home of the Baltimore Orioles. She stayed with the Orioles as an assistant for a few more years before accepting an offer from the Trenton Thunder, a Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees.
Then, as fate would have it, the Orioles reached out to her, and, in November 2006, she became the Orioles’ head groundskeeper, making her one of only two female head groundskeepers in Major League Baseball history. She credits the educational foundation she received at Delaware Tech with helping her find her dream job.
