St. George's Chapel was founded in 1719 as a mission church to the Church of England's Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. The congregation was absorbed into the Episcopal Church upon its founding in 1789. The present building was constructed five years later in 1794. It is one of the oldest houses of worship in Sussex County and has remained in continuous use for more than two centuries. Many of the original settlers of eastern Sussex County are buried in the cemetery surrounding the chapel. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places, and the chapel interior was restored to its original colonial style in the 1950s.
