Stockley Center thanks Cape Henlopen Elks for visits and gifts

August 24, 2023

The Stockley Center residents and staff hold a special place in the hearts of the members of Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540.

Located in Georgetown, the Stockley Center is a Medicaid-certified care facility for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The 50-bed facility provides both intermediate and skilled nursing care for individuals with a variety of medical needs, as well as assisting residents in meeting their physical, mental, personal and social goals.

During the holiday season, led by Barbara Gilsenan, generous members of Cape Henlopen Elks provided gifts to center residents. There are framed photos of their joy on display in the lodge. And in the spring, the lodge provided materials for an Easter bonnet/necktie decorating contest along with baskets filled with craft supplies for each resident.

Most recently, a request was made for special clothing protectors needed for crafts at the center. A call-out was made for donations of colorful beach towels, and for members who had sewing skills (or those who wanted to learn) to create fun, cheery vests. These would be used by the residents to protect their clothing during crafts, meals and other times. And, as usual with Cape Henlopen Elks, the response was overwhelming. In all, 48 clothing protectors were created. Along with Stockley Center staff members, residents Doris Zelift, Marlene Floyd and Joan Robinson visited the Lewes lodge July 19 to pick up the clothing protectors and meet some of the Elks volunteers.

It is with great pride that the Elks support a greater connection with all members of the community; part of its motto reads, “Elks Care – Elks Share.”
