Race into the New Year 5K

According to the internet or news reports, the average American gains 5 pounds over the Christmas holidays or in the month of December. What better way to work off those sugar cookies, honey ham or cup of eggnog than the 16th annual Race into the New Year 5K and quarter-mile kids’ run. The event will be held at noon, Monday, Dec. 31, from the Boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach.

Runners will check in at the Bandstand beginning at 11 a.m. Race-day registration will also begin at 11 a.m. for $25, with long-sleeved T-shirts guaranteed to the first 200 registered participants. Awards will be presented to the overall, masters, and top 3 in five-year age groups. The 5K will begin on the Boardwalk and run north to North Shores and back, while the kids’ run will be held on the Boardwalk. Online registration will be open through 6 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 30.

Striders give thanks

As the Striders wrap up their 29th year of producing road race events at the beach, we would like to thank all the runners, volunteers, sponsors, host restaurants, parks and municipalities. Thank you for another successful year and thousands of dollars raised for great charities, families and organizations in the local area. In a world that is not as stable and mindful as many would like it to be, it is rewarding to me as president and director that an organization I began many years ago continues to do good deeds in the Cape area and help many people in need. Happy New Year to all!
