Sue Ellen Thompson to lecture on poet Jack Gilbert Nov. 18
Sue Ellen Thompson will give a lecture titled “The Man Who Loved Women: Jack Gilbert and His Poems,” at 5:15 p.m., Friday, Nov. 18, at the Lewes Public Library.
Jack Gilbert (1925-2012) won the Yale Younger Poets prize in 1962 for “Views of Jeopardy.” He attained a kind of allure usually foreign to poets, and his photo was featured in Esquire, Vogue and Glamour.
Thompson’s lecture will explore how his relationships with women influenced Gilbert's work and will include a close examination of several of his poems.
Thompson’s sixth book of poetry, “Sea Nettles: New and Selected Poems,” was published in 2022. Her work has been included in the Best American Poetry series, read on National Public Radio more than a dozen times by Garrison Keillor, and recently won a Pushcart Prize.
