The Sussex Academy baseball squad fought off chilly winds and the hot bats of the Blue Jays during the March 18 scrimmage at Sports at the Beach.
Seaford drew first blood, scoring two runners in the first inning, but the Seahawks answered with one in the bottom of the inning and went ahead 5-2 in the third.
Seahawks pitchers juniors Dylan Mooney and Nate Sneller and freshman Wes McLaughlin were effective throughout the scrimmage throwing a variety of off-speed pitches and showing good command of their fastballs, according to Seahawks head coach Steve Oscar.
"Defensively, we made some mistakes, and we were not aggressive enough on several grounds, but overall I was pleased with the effort,” Oscar said.
“I thought we did a great job battling back from a 5-2 deficit,” said Seaford manager Andrew Lamberton. “It is still early in the year and we have a lot to work on. Hats off to [Sussex Academy] and their coaching staff, their kids were well prepared and had good approaches at the plate. They are doing an excellent job over there.”
Sussex Academy is entering its second season as a varsity program. They open the regular season Friday, March 22 at Tatnall. Seaford opens at home Friday, March 22 with Laurel.
