Sussex Academy boys’ lax shoots down Silver Eagles 9-6

March 26, 2019

The Sussex Academy boys’ lacrosse squad took 23 shots on goal and nine hit their mark as the Seahawks shot down the Silver Eagles 9-6 March 22 at home.

The Seahawks came out hot, scoring three times in the first period. They continued their scoring, putting up four in the second while the Silver Eagles also got on the board with four. Each team’s defense came alive in the second half, allowing their opponents only two goals in the last 24 minutes.

Grant Thomas scored three goals to lead the Seahawks. Chase Monigle added two, while Ryan Burke, Max Kogler, Jackson Dinger and Riley Custodio hit the back of the twine with one goal each.

Dinger had three assists, and Kogler, Thomas, Burke, Custodio and Monigle each helped on one.

“I was happy to get the win, especially after getting a beat-down last year from Hodgson,” said SA coach Justin Hetherington. “But it provided us with a gauge of the things we need to work on. I was happy with our ground ball play. It seemed like if the ball was on the ground, we were able to scoop it up. We have an exceptionally young defense; I was happy with they way they played. Offensively against Hodgson, we ran a lot of run-and-gun-style lacrosse. With conference play coming up, I would like to see us slow the pace of our play and get into our offensive set. Penalties really hurt us. I felt as if we played the entire second half a man down, and Hodgson was able to capitalize on several of those opportunities, but it was good to open our 2019 season with a victory.”

Hodgson’s Andrew Trieble led the Silver Eagles with five goals. Michael Coco scored once.

The Seahawks will host Woodbridge Thursday, March 28. The Silver Eagles will host Brandywine Tuesday, March 26.
