Sussex Academy soccer handles Polytech

Seahawks face undefeated Bucs Sept. 26
September 25, 2023

Three different players hit the twine to pace Sussex Academy to a 3-0 shutout of Polytech Sept. 21 in Georgetown. They move to 5-0 on the season.

The Seahawks outshot the Panthers 14-3 and held an 8-0 advantage in corners.

Liam Stegall started off the Seahawks’ scoring when he slammed a penalty kick into the net at the 18-minute mark. Aiden Villar followed with a shot off a pass from Andree Mendoza-Martinez at 38 minutes.

George Sapna finished the Panthers off with a blast from an assist by Keenan Williams at the 44-minute mark.

Carter Norton made three saves for the Seahawks, while Polytech’s James Watterton stopped 11 scoring attempts.

“It was a good showing for us against Poly,” said Sussex Academy coach RJ Dina. “They were organized and obviously well coached. It was a bit of a slow start for us in the attack. We struggled to time runs and create an attack in the middle third. Too many offsides for my liking, and we’ll address that. Left a ton of chances unfinished through the first 40, something we have to correct. Scoring a second goal right before half is often a dagger for the other team. We knew coming out in the second half we needed to go right at them and close the match out in the first 10 minutes.

“I’m really proud of my group in their ability to defend in all parts of the match. Credit to the leadership of CJ, our goalkeeper. We’ve given up two goals in five games, which has allowed for us to constantly be on the front foot in matches.”

The 5-0 Seahawks host 5-0 Milford Tuesday, Sept. 26, while Polytech travels to Seaford to face the Blue Jays.
