Board members of the Sussex County Land Trust, along with state and county officials, gathered at Nanticoke Crossing Park on Dot Avenue in Seaford Nov. 21, to celebrate the groundbreaking and start of trailhead and waterfront improvements.
The 41-acre property is located off Woodland Ferry Road, overlooking the Nanticoke River adjacent to the historic Woodland Ferry terminal near Bethel. The property features 29 acres of mixed hardwood pine forest, 12 acres of open area with large-canopy trees, and 1,900 feet of sweeping shoreline along the Nanticoke River.
During the event, members of the land trust shared a conceptual master plan of the property and a phasing plan for construction. Future amenities include perimeter walking trails, a disc golf course, a parking area, picnic and pavilion areas, and a kayak and canoe launch on the Nanticoke River.
“On behalf of the board of trustees, we are extremely proud to see our vision for this property come to fruition. This property has incredible natural features, and to protect this property from development and repurpose the property into a public amenity is a primary example of the trust’s mission.
“We also could not have led this initiative without our key partners, the Chesapeake Conservancy, Sussex County Council, Mt. Cuba, the U.S. Navy, Delaware Open Space Council and Delaware Fish and Wildlife,” said Ring Lardner, chair of the Sussex County Land Trust.
