Sussex Tech Adult Ed hosts trades rotation for high school students

Thanks to funds from the Delaware Department of Labor, Sussex Tech Adult Education is hosting a rotation project for 20 high school students from the Cape Henlopen, Delmar, Laurel and Woodbridge districts.

The project consists of two rotations: plumbing, HVAC and electrical; and welding, carpentry and heavy equipment operation. Students have an opportunity to rotate through each skilled trade sector and experience the skills, knowledge and work effort needed to become skilled trades professionals in their chosen field. The multifaceted approach includes exploring the trades, training in employability skills, pre-apprenticeship, paid work experience, and earning industry-recognized credentials. Participants will also receive a trades-related tool kit. Upon completion, students will be equipped with essential career readiness skills for the successful attainment of long-term, life-sustaining employment in skilled trades.

Mike Hague, industrial training coordinator, is currently working to find paid internships for the participants. Following high school graduation, they will begin the Sussex Tech Adult Education Apprenticeship Program.
