The fourth-seeded Sussex Tech softball team moved into the quarterfinals of the DIAA State Softball Tournament May 24 with a 3-0 victory over No. 13 Newark Charter School.
Ravens senior Rylee Shockley drove in all three runs for Tech with a single in the first inning and a two-run homer in the fifth inning.
After Alyssa Collins got on base in the first inning, Shockley knocked her in on a single, giving the Ravens the lead they would not relinquish. She then went yard in the fifth with Jakayla Sample on base to nail down the 3-0 win.
Sample had a double for the Ravens, while Taylor Wroten and Jenna Tate hit singles.
Wroten, a sophomore pitcher for the Ravens, struck out seven batters on her way to a one-hit, complete-game shutout. She wore a No. 7 on her left wrist to honor her regular catcher Shannon Lord, who was seriously injured in a recent automobile accident. The team also had a Play for Shan sign hanging in the dugout for more inspiration.
Wroten left two Patriots on base in the first inning, then set down the 13th seed after having the bases loaded with no outs in the fifth.
The Ravens are set to face Delaware Military Academy Friday, May 26, at Tech.
