Sussex Technical High School media broadcasting students Katie Beitzel of Rehoboth Beach and Becca Southmayd of Ocean View teamed up to produce the winning creative video for the Delaware State Education Association’s Read Across America contest.
The contest was sponsored to promote the 100th birthday anniversary of author Dr. Seuss. Students were encouraged to develop a video about why they and their fellow students should become great readers to understand the power of the printed word and the impact it can have on their lives.
Katie and Becca’s video featured Dr. Seuss’ classic book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go.” In his imaginative style, Dr. Seuss lets his readers know that people can do amazing things if they put their minds and hearts to the task. The juniors’ creative video captivated the judges with how they used Dr. Seuss’ images and Seuss-like rhymes, and showed reading in so many clever ways and situations. Judges said the video was well planned with a compelling message, props, sets, great pacing and great acting.
The video was posted on DSEA’s YouTube page, youtube.com/user/dseavideo#p/u/0/-Mj_fqGtLVk. It was also honored in the March 2 edition of the News Journal newspaper. The News Journal awarded Gary Conaway, Sussex Tech’s media broadcasting teacher, a gift certificate to a local bookstore to add to his classroom library.
