Wrestlers are lean-and-hungry athletes, more so just past suppertime, which may account for the quick work – 10 pins over 14 matches, including five each for Cape and Sussex Tech – as the Ravens prevailed over the Vikings 39-33 Jan. 24 at the Big House.

The loss was Cape’s third in a row, a season in transition, and the Vikings are now 3-4 on the season, awaiting a tough 4-1 Laurel team at home Friday, Jan. 26, before grappling at 15-1 Indian River at noon, Saturday, Jan. 27.

Sussex Tech improved to 10-5 on the season.

“The Henlopen Conference is a tough place to make a living,” said Sussex Tech assistant coach Jack Roach. “There are just so many good teams.”

Coach Chris Mattioni of Cape said of the Sussex Tech match: “We wrestled well tonight, better than we have been, and like all close matches, there were bouts that could have turned our way, but we also got bonus points where I wasn’t expecting them.”

The Ravens got pins from Hunter Ruff, 106; Mason Rolph, 113; Hunter Hineline, 120; Michael Covey, 152; and Dustin Rolp, 195.

Cape pins came from Anthony Caruso, 126; Finbar Rishko, 132; Andre Currie, 138; Chris Handlin, 170; and Eduardo Saez, 182.

Close decision matches that went the distance included Jamie Schirmer over Jonah Robertson 5-3 at 285, Thomas Bunting over Jackson Handlin 6-5 at 145, and William Ott over Andrew Hawkins 4-3 at 220 pounds.
