Sussex vocational technical school district enrollment grows

January 11, 2024

In 2023, Sussex County Vocational Technical School District Adult Education saw increased enrollment in apprenticeship, drivers education, Groves/ABE/GED, English as a Second Language, credit recovery and health professions/CNA programs. Overall, there was a 35% increase in students from 2022 to 2023.

The largest increase was in ESL classes. To accommodate the demand, Sussex Tech Adult Ed added two more class locations and increased the number of sessions in its existing locations. Despite adding a total of seven classes, Sussex Tech Adult Ed entered 2024 with an ESL program waiting list. Waiting lists also exist for GED classes and CDL apprenticeships.

“For many years, Sussex Tech Adult Education has been Delaware’s best-kept secret. We have worked hard to increase awareness of our programs in order to help Sussex Countians learn new skills to further their careers or to start new ones,” said Kelly Whaley, Sussex Tech Adult Ed director.

In addition to Adult Ed, Sussex Technical High School is experiencing increased interest. As there are more students who want to attend Sussex Tech High School than there are available seats, school enrollment is based on a lottery system. Interested students can apply between November and January during their eighth-grade year to begin attending Sussex Tech in ninth grade. The open application period for the 2024-25 school year closed Jan. 10. The school is seeing 10% more applications for the 2024-25 school year than at the same time last year for the 2023-24 school year.

Sussex Tech is a public high school that prepares Sussex County students in grades 9-12 for their future success in workforce environments, higher education and the military.
