Taking strawberries to market in Selbyville in 1925

June 10, 2018

We're at the peak of the strawberry season in Sussex County. The crop has provided a nice spring cash boost to farmers for well more than a century. Selbyville served as a prominent strawberry market for many decades. Farmers carried their berries there where they were sold and then shipped by railroad to northern markets. Roydon Hammond made this photograph for Delaware's Department of Agriculture on May 26, 1925. It shows farmers lined up with wagonloads of strawberries waiting their turn to unload.
